How to Impress the Teacher

Did you ever give a teacher an apple?

Some think the tradition began as a simple gift for poorly paid teachers or as a wish to good health or even as a way to kiss up.

Chaos Becomes Calm With A Scribblin’ Planner

I wish I had a genie as my planner.

The other day my husband asked me to do something for him. I don’t remember what it was, but I do remember that I was in the middle of working on something else. My sarcastic response was, “Sure, let me just blink and get it done.”

Since I’m not “I Dream of Jeannie” it started me wishing I did have a genie who could turn my planning and chaos into calm with the blink of an eye.

Then I realized I do have two little somethings that help me plan and organize: the Scribbles Menu Planner and Family Calendar.

I am not the typical A type personality, but I do like some order to my madness. These planners do the trick for me. Every Sunday night I sit down with my planners and think through the week. They then hang on the refrigerator for all to see.

The Menu Planner allows me to do just that: plan out my meals for the week. Just look over your recipes, decide what you want to have that week, fill out the nifty tear-off shopping list attached to each page and you’re set.

The Family Calendar has a place for me to write down what each member of the family is doing each day. If Preston has baseball on Monday or Madison has soccer on Thursday, we all know.

What about you? I’d love to get help from you. What do you use or what do you do to cut down on your chaos?

These planners have been great for me, and my family loves to be able to look at them and know what is coming. I still can’t blink my eyes and get stuff done, but we do know what we’re eating and where we need to be. My Brother is Gone to School!

Today is Preston’s first day of school.

It’s hard to imagine that he is now in 3rd grade. Madison begins kindergarten, but not until tomorrow because she goes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Madison asked me if she could go on the front porch. I checked on her a couple of minutes ago and this is what I found:

I asked her what was wrong. “Nothing,” she replied. I think she misses her big brother. They have had a great summer playing, swimming, watching tv and more together. As all siblings do, they pick on each other every now and then, but she loves being with her big brother.

Too bad he’s gone to school today!

Back to School Traditions

A few weeks ago, my husband discovered an old first-day-of-school picture at his mom’s house.

He thought it was quite funny and decided to post it as his Facebook profile picture. He was shocked to find that over 20 people would comment about the picture. I guess that many people have great memories of their first day of school. Either that or they just wanted to make fun of him! Thankfully, he has changed his profile pic!

Each of us has memories (whether good or bad!) of going back to school.

In Texas we always look forward to school starting because all we have around here in August is 103 degree days. Shockingly, this can make even the pools hot! My kids were swimming at my in-laws last week and said it felt like a hot tub. Refreshing? That’s not refreshing! At least school is air conditioned.

Every year as we gear up for the start of school, our family has some annual traditions. Do you have any back-to-school traditions that you do with your kids? Here are a few of ours . . .

One last dip in the pool with our friends The Bellers.

And, of course, the famous back-to-school haircut!

Back to School Time

It is hard for me to believe that summer is almost gone and fall is about to begin. Fall means many things: the cooling of the air, the leaves changing color and falling, football season (more for my husband!) and the beginning of school. I love the beginning of school: school supplies, new shoes, school clothes and of course a new backpack!

I fondly think back to the annual custom of heading to our local Target with my mom to purchase all my supplies. It was bittersweet to say goodbye to the carefree days of summer only to dive back into fall where a life full of discipline and routine would begin. I am reminded of a quote from one of my favorite movies, “You’ve Got Mail”:

Joe Fox: “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.”

The beginning of school this year is bittersweet for me once again but in a different way. My baby is going to Kindergarten, leaving the nest to embark on a new stage of life. She keeps telling us, “We have another kindergartner in our house.”

It is so fun to see the excitement on her face and in her heart, but it is also sad for me to let her go. Mrs. Hopkins was her preschool teacher, and she was wonderful. The first day of school she read the class a precious book, “The Kissing Hand” by Audrey Penn. If you have a young one headed to school I highly recommend this book. We have since added it to our collection and found a video reading of the book online that your little one might also enjoy.

As you start getting ready for this school year take your sweet kids on a little “field trip.” Go to your local Target or Walmart and let them pick out a little something special to start their school year.

A must have at our house is a bag tag for our backpacks. Lucky for my kids I happen to be in the bag tag business, and they LOVE choosing anything Scribbles. As we get ready for our year, each of our children gets to pick out a bag tag and a cute little something for the teacher!
