This past Sunday my doorbell rang and sitting on my porch were SIX reindeer! They were six of the cutest reindeer I have ever seen. My kids were elated because these weren’t just any reindeer – these were IBC Root Beer reindeers. What kid (and for that matter what adult!) doesn’t like a nice cold root beer?
Pass on the cheer to a friend with a six-pack of IBC Reindeer Root Beers this year! All you need is some googly eyes and pipe cleaners. This is one of the easiest projects ever and they’re soooooo stinkin’ cute.
They always sad, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” But I have a little secret that you need to know about this Christmas season. I love the smell of the season, and Christmas has some of the best smells. Walking into a house at Christmas time and smelling fresh evergreen warms my heart.
Every year the day after Thanksgiving, my husband and I load up our kids and head to a local tree farm. We try to create a special holiday experience for our family. Of course, in Texas you never know what the weather will be: rain, freezing cold, hotter than hades or even snow. Yes, one year we even had snow!
We begin our tree hunt with a tractor-pulled hay ride, then grab a saw and walk among the many trees, looking for the perfect one. We chop it down then head back with our tree to the red barn to have it prepared for us to bring home. We also purchase one of my favorite items at the tree farm: a fresh evergreen wreath. The kids and I are always fascinated as we watch them assemble our wreath. Every year the wreath adds the perfect touch to our dining room table.
After we make our purchase we tie the tree to the top of our car and head home. On the way, we stop at our local Lowes or Home Depot. Why you may ask? Well this is where I pick up FREE scraps of evergreen! I love to accent different areas of our home with scraps of evergreen. The best part is that I can do this for FREE. Your local stores that carry Christmas trees are happy for you to clean up scraps off the store floor. Gather as much as you think you need, head home and start decorating!
I love to bake and enjoy finding any excuse to make something sweet! This past week my kitchen has been filled with the smell of pumpkin. I made several loaves of pumpkin bread for family and friends, but my big project was pumpkin cut-out cookies. I have been making cut-out cookies for as long as I can remember.
My mom and I loved getting ready for the holidays and making cookies was always a highlight. It is fun to now get to share that same joy with my kids.
In fact at my wedding and my cousins’ wedding we had heart-shaped cut-out cookies with the word “love” written on each cookie. My Aunt Anne is an amazing baker, and she is the one who passed on the cookie recipe to our family. It is amazing!
Every holiday I pull out the cookie recipe and make a batch of our favorite holiday shapes to bake and decorate. This Thanksgiving season I pulled out my GINORMOUS pumpkin cookie cutter. Each year I make cookies for each of my kids’ classes. After spending hours in the kitchen, I think I need to find a smaller pumpkin cookie cutter.
Recently I was introduced to a couple of great websites that show you how to decorate cookies. I highly recommend them if you are interested or love to make cookies. Making cut out cookies is really fun, but it is definitely a labor of love. Every time I start the process I am always reminded of all the time my Aunt Anne spent making cookies for my wedding! Aunt Anne if you are reading this Thank You again for making dozens of cookies that were the perfect touch at my reception!
What are some of your Thanksgiving traditions?
