hop I Will Survive . . . Schools in Session!

When the month of August hits, the anticipation and build up of the first day of school begins. The thoughts are flooding our minds, what teacher will we have this year, who will be in our class, do I have all my supplies?  etc. There is always a lot of excitement and anxiousness as the time draws near.

Honestly, last summer I officially named the week before school, “Hell Week.” Hell Week starts when my children turn into creatures I don’t know, much less recognize. It is like every hormone in their body hits off-the-chart levels, and I start wondering “Whose children are these?” The anticipation of the unknown takes over and this mom goes from sadness of our unstructured summer coming to an end to thinking scheduled school days can’t start soon enough!

I always love the first day of school. It is one of the few magical days for my kids during the entire school year. My kids wake up with smiles on their faces and happiness oozing out of them with excitement for this first day of school! The long anticipated first day is here and they can’t wait to get out the front door. We arrive at school with all the other moms holding camera’s so we can soon post pictures on Facebook to mark this special day.

Then day TWO comes, and the picture is totally different! A remarkable difference from that magical first day.

Conversations with my daughter go from excitement about school to “School’s boring!” One morning  my conversation with Madison was this:

Madison: “Mom, can’t I just skip school for one day?”
(of course I am thinking, this is going to be a LONG year)

Me: “No, Madison you cannot skip school. I am going to pray for you today that school will not be boring.”

Madison: “You know it will still be boring mom.”

…and out the door she went! icon smile I Will Survive . . . Schools in Session!

Slowly but surely we are moving out of the laid back schedule of summer to the rigorous school days that are never dull. The adjustment for Madison has been a little bit harder, but she’s getting there. Preston loves school – P.E and Recess are the highlights of his day.

Every afternoon I look forward to driving through carpool, picking up those sweet smiling faces and hearing all about their day. Oh how I love them and miss them when they are gone.

How was the beginning of your school year?
